Austria recalled for consultations its Ambassador to Israel, Otto Pleinert, over Israel’s failure to replace its retired Ambassador to Austria, Michael Elizur. Israel’s move was seen as a reaction to the election as president of Austria the previous summer of Kurt Waldheim, allegedly involved in Nazi crimes.
