Charges that non – Catholics no longer enjoy equal rights in Austria were condemned as “malicious inventions” here yesterday by Egon Berger-Waldenegg, Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Threatening that “informants” responsible for the spread of “anti-Austrian propaganda” would be severely prosecuted, Berger-Waldenegg termed all reports concerning the oppression of Protestant and Jewish citizens of Austria “baseless lies” and repeated a previous declaration by the government that it is according “exemplary protection” to minorities, their rights and their cultures.
A sharply – worded protest against government toleration of anti-Semitism was submitted to Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg on Friday by Constantin T. Dumba, former Austrian Ambassador to the United States and president of the Austrian League of Nations Union.
Dr. Dumba’s memorandum condemned official leniency toward anti-Jewish incitement as injurious to Austria, “disturbing internal Austrian economy and flagrantly infringing on the Austrian constitution and laws.”
