The State of Israel hopes for an early, start in negotiations between representatives of Austrian Jews and the major world Jewish organizations with the Austrian Government for the payment of reparations for damages suffered by Jews under the Nazi regime, Arieh Eshel, Israel Consul here, told a mass meeting today. The meeting marked the fifth anniversary of Israel Independence Day.
Mr. Eshel, who emphasized that many Austrian Jews have found refuge in Israel, said that such negotiations would make for. Close relations between Israel and Austria. He stressed that the Israel Government was satisfied by recent statements of top Austrian government officials promising an early start to negotiations and added that Israel realizes that these leading Austrians are willing to observe the principles of democracy in their country. The Israeli diplomat declared that the problem of heir less Jewish property requires a speedy solution.
Among the guests at the meeting was Austrian Chancellor Julius Rsab, who recently pledged his new government to enter such negotiations, and representatives of various government departments, as well as Jewish leaders
