The Austrian Cabinet accepted today a proposal from Justice Minister Christian Broda to alter the present deadline for prosecution of Nazi war criminals under the Austrian statute of limitations.
The substance of the proposal is that Austrian legislation may legally be changed to permit extension of the cutoff date which is June 29. The Justice Ministry now can submit to Parliament a change in Austrian criminal law for that purpose and will do so before the Easter recess.
The change will provide that provisions for prosecution for murder which carried the death penalty, and which were valid until 1950 when the death penalty was abolished in Austria, will be in effect without limitations.
