Austrian Chancellor Leopold Figl today welcomed the newly-elected leaders of the Vienna Jewish Community, headed by president David Schapira, and promised to advise Mb Ministry of Property Control to cooperate with Jewish representatives in all future restitution matters.
Figl expressed regret that his government was as yet unable to recognize the state of Israel but wished the Jewish state “great success in its struggle for liberty.” Schapira voiced his appreciation of Figl’s attitude, and promised him the loyalty of the Jewish community.
Earlier, the delegation was informed by Mayor Koerner of this city that the municipality of Vienna has set aside a proportionate number of free apartments for the use of needy Jews in the city.
Koerner also promised the delegation that no deductions will be made from the Jews’ municipal allowances, even though they are receiving aid from the Joint distribution Committee and the Jewish Community. He said he regarded the supplementary aid as necessary in view of the “special conditions under which the Jews live.”
