Chancellor Leopold Figl of Austria, on his visit here en route to the United States, promised to give his closest attention on his return to Vienna to Jewish complaints against restitution laws and procedures in Austria. Dr. Figl is due to arrive in the United States today.
The Austrian Chancellor yesterday received Dr. S.R. Bienenfeld, head of the legal department of the World Jewish Congress, to discuss Austrian-Jewish issues, including a proposed formation of a Jewish fund for heirless and unclaimed property, compensation for internment to Austrian-Jewish victims residing abroad and payment of pensions due to Jews living abroad.
Dr. Bienenfeld urged the Chancellor not to permit any changes in the restitution law and submitted proposals for early settlement of the problem of heirless and unclaimed property to be used for Jewish rehabilitation. Earlier, Dr. Figl addressed the British section of the Inter-Parliamentary Union at the House of Commons and replied to questions on a number of subjects. Asked about a proposed amendment of the Third Restitution law against which Jewish groups object, the Chancellor promised to see that “justice is done.”
