The Jewish community of Salzburg has received a number of documents pertaining to the stay of Dr. Theodor Herzl in that city, as a gift from the Salzburg Archives. The Archives requested that the documents remain in the possession of the local Jewish community.

They pertain to his activities while a law clerk in this city in 1885. An entry in Dr. Herzl’s diary referring to this period in his life reads: “I would have liked to stay in this beautiful city, but as a Jew I had no chance to become a judge. Therefore I said adieu to Salzburg and to jurisprudence.”
