Following extended negotiations between the Austrian Government and representatives of Jewish organizations here the government has agreed to limited cooperation in caring for Jewish refugees. Under the terms of ##e agreement the government will press the International Refugee Organization and ##ther international agencies to assist the Jews.
Dr. Alfons Just, an official of the Interior Ministry, who was appointed to ##onfer with the representatives of the Vienna Jewish Community, the Joint Distribution Committee, the Jewish Agency and the Zionist Federation, said, however, that the government will not continue to contribute funds towards the support of any refugees in Austria, including the Jews. He also scored the I.R.O.’s failure to aid the Jews, while praising the activities of the J.D.C.
It is estimated that there are some 4,200 Jewish refugees in Vienna at present. As a result of stricter controls on the Hungarian border fewer Jews are infiltra##ting–only 300 arrived during the past ten days. The border controls, which were apparently instituted in a drive against black marketers, have stranded several groups of Rumanian Jews.Ugo Carusi, special State Department assistant on DP problems, who is touring Europe on a mission for President Truman, has visited several camps in the American zone. It is believed that he is studying the DP problem with an eye to emigration.
