For the first time since the war, an Austrian neo-Nazi has sued a Jewish newspaper for libel. The case arose when the editor-in-chief of the “Neue Welt,” Jerzy Kuenstlinger, wrote an editorial concerning Hans Stueber formerly of the League of Independents and now organizer of the new Nazi-tinged Free Democratic National Workers Party.
Stueber, in the course of a parliamentary debate on the establishment of a fund for the compensation of victims of Nazi persecution now living abroad, had attacked world Jewish organizations. Kuenstlinger commented on the speech, calling Stueber “indecent.” The editorial ended with the words, “there are decent persons, and Stuebers “Vienna’s Jews are anxiously awaiting the outcome of the libel trial, which is set for the end of this month, since it is being regarded as a test case.
