Dr. Ludwig Steiner, Austrian Undersecretary of State, returned today from Israel where he discussed with Israeli Cabinet members various aspects of restitution for victims of the Nazi era in Austria.
He said the West German-Austrian agreement for such payments, which is expected to be ratified soon by both countries, was a matter of top interest in Israel. Some questions of payment are now being negotiated between the Austrian Government and the Committee of Claims in Austria, which is representing the interests of Jewish victims.
The Austrian official said he had been most impressed by the “pioneer spirit” of Israel and the readiness of its people to make sacrifices in defense of their country.
