Resentment of the Austrian press against American criticism of the pro-Nazi laws passed recently by the Austrian parliament is resulting in a flood of anti-Jewish comments and in charges that the American position was dictated by Jewish influences.
The Upper Austrian press claims that the American stand was dictated by the efforts on the part of the Democratic Party in the United States to secure Jewish votes in the forthcoming Presidential election.
The newspaper, Wiener Montag, writes: “Austrians have again received proof that the Jewish people want to receive the last possible iota of satisfaction and revenge for persecution under Hitler, as well as profit.” The Salzburger Nachrichten says, if the United States is so concerned bout victims of the Nazis in Austria, it should give Austria a long-term loan to satisfy their claims.
The Neue Wiener Tageszeitung says “only” 33,716 Austrians are at present registered as incriminated Nazis. The paper reports, however, that the People’s Courts have dropped 82,000 cases and referred 22,000 to other courts.
The Soviet organ, Oesterreichische Zeitung, says America wants to continue persecuting “little Nazis” and “all those opposing American war preparations.”
