An entire detachment of Major Emil Fey’s Heimwehr, Austria’s National Guard which played an important role in suppressing the recent Nazi rebellion, was today disarmed and many of its members arrested by police emergency forces.
The police made the arrests following a brief hand-to-hand conflict when they rushed into the Heimwehr barracks in the working class section of Florisdorf, scene of the bloody suppression of the Socialist revolt last February. They acted on charges from other military units that the Florisdorf detachments were “untrustworthy and traitors.”
It was thought in some circles here that the action was directed against Major Fey, who for some time was under suspicion of having been in league with the Nazis who had assassinated Chancellor Dollfuss.
