Austrian newspapers reaching here today are filled with virulent anti-Jewish propaganda aimed at frightening the population in Austria with the bogey of “Jewish revenge” should the Nazis lose the war.
The central theme of this campaign is that one of the Allied war aims is to have all Jews returned to their pre-war homes. “One can easily imagine what we shall face should the Jews find their way back to Vienna,” one of the Nazi papers writes. An editorial in another paper speaks of the “grinning faces” of the returning Jews and warns that “the Austrians can still defend themselves.”
