An English translation of “Hope Against Hope,” the memoirs of the widow of Soviet Yiddish poet Osip Mandelstam, has won the ninth annual translation award of the American chapter of P.E.N. for Max Hayward, an Oxford don. The $1,000 award, donated by the Book-of-the-Month Club was presented to Hayward’s publisher here by the international association of poets, essayists and novelists. The book by Nadezhda Mandelstam was published by Atheneum last October.
