The appointment of Axel Springer, the West German publisher, as an honorary fellow of the Weizmann Institute of Science, was announced here today. Mr. Springer, whose newspapers have long espoused the cause of Israel, is the fifth West German to be so honored. The Institute celebrated its 25th anniversary this week under the co-direction of Meyer W. Weisgal, retiring president, and Dr. Albert Sabin, the president-elect.
Mr. Springer’s publications work for the reconciliation of the Jewish and German peoples. In accepting the Weizmann honor, Mr. Springer said, “today one more step is taken toward that reconciliation.”
The Institute also dedicated a statue to the noted British Jewish leader Lord Sieff of Brimpton, who is marking his 80th birthday. Symbolizing the enduring link between science and man’s progress, the sculpture is located at the entrance to the Daniel Sieff Research Institute, predecessor of the Weizmann Institute. The Sieff Institute was founded in 1934 under Chaim Weizmann. Present at the dedication was Marcus J. Sieff, deputy chairman of the Weizmann board of governors.
