A warning that a 24-hour strike will be declared by all bakers throughout Israel if the Israeli Government institutes its plan to cut workers’ wages on Friday, as part of its program to reduce the high cost of living, was issued today by the Bakers Union, which is controlled by Mapam, the left-wing United Workers Party.
The warning was issued following a resolution adopted by the Mapam today, at a session of its council. The resolution emphasized that the Mapam “will stand by the workers in defense of their wages.”
A stormy session of the executive council of the Histadrut is now expected as a result of the serious disagreement which is developing between the Mapam and Mapai, the Israeli Labor Party. The Histadrut is composed of both groups, and while the Mapam is opposed to the government austerity program, which includes the cutting of wages, the Mapai supports this program fully.
