Bamberger Set Pace for Drive in New Jersey

With a generous pace set by Louis Bamberger, veteran Newark philanthropist and patron of the arts and sciences, the United Jewish Appeal campaign for $50,000 has been launched in Essex County, New Jersey.

Mr. Bamberger, attending a dinner conference in Newark of the initial gifts committee at which Rabbi Jonah B. Wise and Paul Baerwald, two of the national co#rmen of the Appeal, were guest speakers, pledged to contribute one dollar for every two dollars subscribed.

The drive opened Tuesday with a mass rally at which Morris Margulies, secretary of the Zionist Organization of America, and Joseph C. Hyman, honorary secretary of the Appeal, were guest speakers.

In the interim, parlor meetings have been held or are being held in the homes of leading citizens who have formed campaign units in the following communities: Montclair. Bloomfield, Verona and Caldwell; Irvington; Maplewood and Milburn; the Oranges; and Kearny Arlington and Harrison. Mordecai L. Lipis of Maplewood is at the helm of the organization activity in the suburbs. Montclair is preparing to launch a joint drive for #00 for the Appeal and for its own communal needs.

The leading fraternal organizations have pledged their active aid and cooperation. A general conference of representatives was addressed by Aaron Levinstone, president of the Newark Zionist District. David E. Bernstein, chairman of the speakers’ bureau, presided.

Mayor Meyer C. Ellenstein of Newark and Mr. Bamberger are honorary chairmen of the drive. Mr. Newman, president of the reform congregation of Temple B’nai Jeshurun, is the active chairman and the associate chairmen are: Albert Hollander, Samuel I. Kessler, Samuel F. Leber, Aaron Levinstone and Samuel Schecdner. Joseph Stern is treasurer; Mrs. Leah Frank Segal, secretary, and Michael A. Stavitsky heads the executive committee. Morris Scheck is publicity chairman and Charles Manshel, initial gifts chairman.

Mrs. Felix Fuld, sister of Mr. Bamberger, is honorary head of the women’s division and Mrs. Jack F. Meyer, the active leader. Her associate chairmen are Mesdames Leo Abrahams, Meyer Kussy, Arthur L. Myers and Julius Meirick. Vice chairmen are Mesdames Harry Ber#witz, Nathan Kussy, Richard ###, Julius Flink and Fred New-#ark.
