The authorities today extended punitive measures against Jews for continuing attacks upon Arabs. Following sniping at an Arab bus near the Romema quarter, the Jerusalem military commander suspended Jewish bus lines to the suburbs of Mahane Jehuda and Givat Shaul for 48 hours starting at sundown last night. No casualties resulted from the attack.
Givat Shaul is a populous Jewish suburb and the site of important quarries, one of which is American-owned. The suspension of bus lines to the community forces hundreds of Jewish workers to walk past the village of Lifta, notorious for Arab terrorism, along a road where a number of Jews were killed in the past three years.
The order imposing 8 p.m. curfew upon Jewish cafes until further notice, in retaliation for the bombing of an Arab cafe in which 11 Arabs were wounded, describes the bombing as a “cowardly act by a Jewish terrorist.”
