The Silver Jubilee of Bar-IIan University in Israel was marked last night by 500 persons at a dinner and convocation in the Pierre Hotel featuring the inauguration of a Chair in The Jerusalem Talmud in honor of Prof. Saul Lieberman of New York, rector of the Jewish Theological Seminary.
Dr. Emanuel Rackman, president of Barllan, praised Lieberman as “one of the great Talmudic scholars of our age.” Lieberman, 82, is a trustee of Bar-IIan and the recipient of honorary degrees from Harvard University and from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, of which he is an alumnus. Mrs. Jane Stern of New York, president of the university’s American Board of Overseers, chaired the dinner.
Mrs. Ofira Navon, the wife of Israel’s President, presented Israel’s Lapid Prize for Adult Education to the Brookdale Foundation for developing “an innovative program at Bar-IIan University that is opening the gates of education to retired persons and encouraging inter-generational communication within the university environment.” Mrs. Navon, herself an expert in the field of adult education mode the presentation in behalf of the Israeli National Association for Adult Education.
