Bar-Ilan University in Israel increased its student body this year by 30 percent to 1,500 but was compelled to refuse admission for lack of facilities to some 500 qualified candidates, Matityahu Alder, the university director-general, reported here today.
Mr. Alder, who is en route to New York to attend a meeting of the university’s board of governors, also reported that the teaching staff had been expanded by 35 percent and that two new buildings for the university’s departments of physics and sociology, were virtually complete. Four more buildings will be completed next year.
The board of governors meeting will be attended by Moshe Shapiro, Israel’s Interior Minister, Dr. Samuel Belkin, president of Yeshiva University of New York, Prof. Saul Lieberman of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, Astorre Mayer of Milan, Prof. M. Jammer and Bialik prizewinner Dr. Baruch Kurzweil, he said.
Mr. Alder said that the university’s current budget had reached 4,500, 000 pounds ($1,500, 000) and its development budget 5, 000, 000 pounds ($1, 666, 000). He reported that the university student body included 200 from overseas and that 18 percent were of Sephardic or Oriental origin.
