The Bavarian Parliament today passed the law which in effect is a prohibition of schechita, the Jewish method of slaughtering animals. The law forbids the slaughtering of animals without first stunning them. Parliament approved the law by a vote of 65 to 42, the opposition votes being all cast by members of the People’s Party. The law goes into effect October 1.
Bavarian Jewry has decided to appeal to the Central Parliament in Berlin and to the highest Reich court to annul the Bavarian Parliament’s action because it infringes the German constitution’s guarantees of religious freedom.
