Beersheba boasts the largest number of chess grand masters per capita of any city in the world. The ratio of one grand master — chess’ top ranking — for every 22,875 residents puts Beersheba well above traditional chess Meccas like Moscow and St. Petersburg, Russia, according to a report in The Associated Press. “Beersheba has a culture of chess,” said Vitali Golod, one of the city’s eight grand masters.
