Premier Menachem Begin underwent four hours of intensive heart checkups at Jerusalem’s Hadassah Hospital today and was pronounced “a healthy man” at the end of them. “All that we can say is that he is a very healthy man,” said Prof. Mervyn Gotsman, head of cardiology at the hospital. The Premier’s office announced this evening that Begin was already back at his desk. The tests had been announced a day in advance to allay fears and speculations.
A hospital spokesman said the tests included treading a treadmill, electrocardiography under conditions of strain, echocardiography (transmitting impulses of ultra-sound through the body so that the intracranial structures reflect them) and myocardial scintigraphy (the radioactive examination of the function of the heart).
Begin was struck by a major heart attack last May, soon after his election victory, and suffered further complications during the summer. But since then he has been in good health.
