King Badouin unveiled today a monument to the “Unknown Political Prisoner” at the Breendock Fortress where many Belgian patriots, including Jews, were murdered by the Nazis. The fortress was also the assembly point for Jews being deported to the Auschwitz death camp.
The monument is a figure of a kneeling man with his head turned defiantly toward the fortress. It was sculptured by a Jewish sculptor named Yanchelevici, who was born in Rumania but has lived and worked in Belgium for more than 20 years.
