The visit which Elizabeth, Queen of the Belgians, made last night to the Yiddish Theatre to witness a performance by the celebrated Wilno troupe was hailed by the Belgian press today as a demonstration by the ruling house of sympathy with the Jews and of protest against anti-Semitism. The papers pointed out that the Queen intended to express her feelings regarding persecution of the Jews and chose this visit to the Yiddish Theatre as an effective means of doing so.
The Queen was enthusiastically received by the audience at the theatre. She stayed throughout the entire performance and at its conclusion received M. Maso, director of the troupe, expressing her appreciation of the presentation.
The play was “Kiddush Hashem”, by the famous Yiddish playwright, Sholem Asch.
