The commission which has been appointed by the Belgian government whose task it will be to investigate the circumstances of the German refugees lodged here, who total about 20,000, began its work today.
Its task will be threefold. It is to investigate the position of the refugees and their way of life, adopt measures for their relief and assist whenever possible, and establish the right of the refugees to settle in the country.
High Commissioner James G. McDonald, head of the International Commission for Refugees appointed by the League of Nations, visited Belgium this week and consulted members of the committee.
Its members include Director Costerman of the Chancellary of the Foreign Office, president; M. Solvais, director of the Industry and Labor Ministry; Max Gottschalk, president of the Jewish Relief Committee for Refugees, and M. Lickendate, director of the Surete Publique.
