Ben Gurion Airport is to lease from the United States what is regarded as the “latest word” in American radar, now in use in 96 leading U.S. airports throughout the country but, with its ancillary equipment also to be installed, not yet in use in most European countries.
Airport authority chairman Arye Grosbard said three U.S. Federal Aviation Administration officials are already in Israel to train local personnel in use of the new equipment. “Israel’s flight safety will be brought up to the highest level in the world,” he said.
Because of its greater accuracy and its link with other air control systems, traffic controllers will be able to decrease the present distance between approaching and departing planes within the Ben Gurion Airport control area, increasing the airport’s capacity by some 30 percent, Grosbard said.
