Monroe Goldwater, president of the United Jewish Appeal of Greater New York and a member of the U.J.A. delegation now touring Israel, today stated that he was “authorized by the Premier of Israel to say that a recent Jewish Telegraphic Agency report attributing certain statements to the Prime Minister concerning the immigration of Jewish youth from America was a distortion of his views.
Mr. Goldwater added: “I am persuaded that at no time did the Prime Minister say or give any reason to believe that Israel is interested in anything but freewill immigration of any Jews washing to enter this country.” Mr. Goldwater said he had been authorized by Premier David Ben Gurion to say that at a meeting with an American Labor Zionist delegation in Tel Aviv some weeks ago Mr. Ben Gurion had expressed the hope that “Israel might have the know-how and vitality and democratic spirit that the youth and other American Jews might contribute to Israel.”
Mr. Ben Gurion “recognized fully that in every country where Jews exists, in the United States as elsewhere, they will build as citizens their respective countries as Jews have always done,” the U.J.A. leader concluded.
