Prime Minister-designate David Ben Gurion today called on President Itzhak Ben Zvi to report on the progress of his negotiations for the formation of a Cabinet, after having completed the first round of talks with the parties concerned. Mr. Ben Gurion submitted the program which he presented to the parties, to the President.
The last stage of the first round of consultations took place earlier this morning when Mr. Ben Gurion met with representatives of Agudah and Poale Agudah. The Agudists submitted a number of demands to the Mapai leader. Included in their program was a law against the raising and sale of pigs; a Sabbath law–which would not permit the Ministry of Labor to permit Saturday work at its own discretion, as it now does; the maintenance of religious influence in the colonization of new immigrants–particularly those arriving from North Africa; and measures which would “not destroy the middle class.”
Mr. Ben Gurion promised to consider the demands. At the same time he expressed a strong desire to complete all negotiations by the week-end. The second round of negotiations for the formation of a Government will open tomorrow.
