High Court of Rangoon has decided that the Bene Israelites, a tribe in India whose members claim to be Jews, are entitled to enjoy the privileges and amenities of the Rangoon Synagogue, despite the fact that the trustees of the synagogue do not wish to recognize them as Jews.
The decision was issued by the court in a case brought by the Bene Israelites against the trustees of the Rangoon synagogue. The case lasted over two years. The verdict was issued Friday on the basis of expert advice written by Chief Rabbi Hertz of England and Hacham Gaster, well-known London rabbi. Both informed the court that the Bene Israelites are Jews.
