The State Department has suddenly altered its plans to replace Donald Bergus, its chief representative in Cairo, with Michael S. Sterner, the head of its Egyptian Affairs Section in Washington. The change was scheduled to take place about Nov. 20. A Department spokesman said that Bergus will remain indefinitely in Cairo as director of the American “interests section.” Sterner will continue at his post here. “Since we are engaged in intensified discussions on the Middle East situation,” the spokesman said. “This is not the time to change horses in midstream.” Bergus, who has been in Cairo since Aug. 19, 1967, was scheduled for assignment to a university in the US for the remainder of the academic year.
