Meiselish, acting correspondent of the Jewish Morning Journal of New York, was arrested here today two hours after he had filed a cable containing excerpts of a speech by Dr. Joseph Goebbels, Minister of Propaganda, to his paper.
Meiselish, who is well known as a journalist and novelist, was taken to an unrevealed place of detention. Since he is legally a “man without a country,” and is not a member of the foreign correspondents’ association here, there is no one to make representations to the government in his behalf.
The excerpts from the Goebbels speech which Meiselish cabled included the statement that the German Jews were proven to have power to have anti-Hitler propaganda and agitation discontinued in the world outside Germany. These portions of his speech were also carried by the larger press associations, but no action has been taken on that account against their correspondents here.
The “Jewish Morning Journal” has appealed to Secretary of State Cordell Hull to intervene in the case, it was said at their offices yesterday.
