The Jewish Community of Berlin today decided to invite Jacob Weinberg, well known New York Jewish operatic composer, to come to Germany to compose choral music for synagogues.
The decision was taken as a result of the tremendous success Weinberg’s Sabbath Eve liturgy met when it was given in concert form on Oct. 24 before a capacity audience of 3,000 persons at Berlin’s largest Jewish place of worship, the Oranienburgerstrasse Synagogue.
Hitherto unknown in Germany, Mr. Weinberg is now the talk of Jewish musical circles. His liturgy was “discovered” by the noted conductor Chemia Winavar while searching for music suitable for the “ghetto” concerts. Mr. Winavar recommended the work for performance and also urged the Community to invite the composer to come to Germany.
