Cheap furnished rooms were at a premium today as hundreds of Jewish families cast about for low-priced living quarters. The factors contributing to the wave of moving were the eviction of Jewish families from the Hindenburg cooperative dwellings, the impoverishment of Jewish war veterans by the order of December 31 depriving them of state positions, and the order forcing Jewish families to discharge “Aryan” female servants, making it impossible for them to maintain large homes.
The exodus to smaller homes was accompanied by the besieging of second hand furniture dealers by Jews anxious to get furniture off their hands at any price.
