The Berlin municipality today unanimously approved a compensation law which will reimburse Jews and other victims of Nazi persecution for the time they spent in prisons or suffered ridicule and loss of rights during the Nazi regime. The law was prepared in close cooperation with leaders of the Jewish community here.
The measure, which provides a top compensation of 45,000 deutschemarks, will pay benefits to those who were sent to forced labor camps, had their health impaired as a result of discrimination or who were forced to wear the yellow Star of David. The law also provides benefits for widows and orphans of victims of the Nazis.
