A 58-year-old official of the local police department, Fritz Knop, has been arrested on suspicion of having participated in mass killings of Jews and Poles in Eastern Europe.
Knop, who is now a criminal investigator, readily admitted wearing the uniform of the SD Security Service, a sort of super-Gestapo, and being present at a number of mass executions, but has so far denied taking part in the actual shootings.
