The Berlin restitution office has paid Jewish claimants about 250,000 Deutschemarks, Heinz Galinski, head of the Berlin Jewish community, reported at a meeting of the Community Council.
In the course of the meeting, Rabbi M. Frier proposed that former rabbis and officials of the Berlin community be given pensions by the community. Galinski, who favored the project, pointed out, however, that the community has no funds and will receive none from the proceeds of heirless Jewish property because it is not recognized as a successor organization. Funds for this purpose, he said, would have to come from either the Jewish Restitution Successor Organization, operating in the U.S. zone, or the Trust Corporation, a British organization.
