Berlin Savant Celebrates His 60th Birthday

Dr. Ismar Elbogen, research historian and professor at the School for Jewish learning here, celebrated his sixtieth birthday today.

Professor Elbogen has been connected with the school since 1903. He was born at Schildberg, in the province of Posen, in 1874. From 1893 to 1899 he attended the Jewish Theological Seminary and the University at Breslau, and subsequently was appointed instructor at the Italian Rabbinical College at Florence.

In 1922 and 1923 Professor Elbogen was guest lecturer at the Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. His principal work, “The Historical Development of the Jewish Service,” gives a comprehensive account of all researches so far made in the field of Jewish liturgy. His “History of the Jews Since the Decline of the Jewish State” also has been translated into English and Swedish.

Professor Elbogen plays a leading part in a number of Jewish scientific and other organizations such as the Central Union of German Citizens of the Jewish Faith, the Prussian League of Jewish Communities, and the Berlin League for Jewish History and Literature. He is a member of the directorium of the Judaistic Institute at the University of Jerusalem, edited the historical section of the Encyclopedia Judaica and is one of the editors of the Zeit-schrft fuer die Geschichte der Juden in Deutschland. His latest work, “Germania Judaica,” which is a history of a thousand years of German-Jewish history, shortly will be published by the Society for the Furtherance of Jewish Learning.
