Rudolph Schildkraut, the tragedian, now in New York, is dead, almost the entire Berlin press insists, despite absence of confirmation of the report. Columns are devoted in leading newspapers to Schildkraut’s dramatic talents and his activities, the "obituaries" being accompanied by photographs of the actor. Biographical sketches published on this occasion tell of Schildkraut’s arrival in Germany from Salonica as a poor Jewish lad of fifteen and of his rapid rise on the German stage until he reached its "highest point".
At his New York home, 39 E. 27th St., Mr. Schildkraut told the Jewish Telegaphic Agency:
"The only reply I can make to the amusing new of my death is, that I am not pleased with the obituaries and therefore have decided to go on living; at any rate until after my appearance as "Shylock’ and ‘King Lear’ in the English language at the ‘Garrick Theatre’ this season – which roles are to follow my present English vehicle ‘The Cod of Vengeance".
