Bernard Abrams, of Jersey City, N.J., a combat veteran of World War II, was today elected the National Commander of the Jewish War Veterans at the organization’s 64th annual convention. He succeeds Sam Shaikowitz of St. Louis. The second highest post, that of National Judge Advocate, went to Hyman Wilensky, of New London, Conn.
The convention adopted a resolution condemning the Egyptian blockade of the Suez Canal against Israeli shipping. The resolution appealed to President Eisenhower and the State Department “to use every possible means to cause Egypt to desist from its treaty violations and broken promises and, if our Government deems it desirable, to present a fitting resolution to the General Assembly of the United Nations dealing with this situation.”
The delegates also passed a resolution asking for the deportation at the earliest opportunity of the “Butcher of the Balkans” Andrija Artukovic, a former Minister of the Interior of the Nazi puppet state of Croatia. Artukovic now lives in Los Angeles. He came here under a forged visa and enjoys American freedom despite the fact that while he was Minister of the Interior of Croatia, his Government initiated more Jewish and Serbian deaths than the Nazis.
