Bernard M. Baruch today presented Irene Dunne, noted screen and radio actress, with a special award for her efforts in combatting racial and religious bigotry in the United States. The citation was made at the 20th anniversary luncheon-meeting of the National Conference of Christians and Jews held at the Waldorf-Astoria.
In presenting Miss Dunne with the special N.C.C.J. award, Mr. Baruch said that she had been selected as this year’s recipient for “her efforts to decrease intolerance and for bringing about “better understanding “between all creeds, peoples and nations.” Citations were also awarded to Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II. ,p/>Other speakers at the meeting–at which the opening of Brotherhood Week on Feb. 20 was announced–included Mayor William O’Dwyer and Nelson Rockefeller. Louis Nizer served as chairman.
