George S. Messersmith, successor to Governor Earle of Pennsylvania as United States Minister to Austria, returned to this country last evening on the steamship Washington of the United States Lines and told the press that conditions for the Jews appear more encouraging under Chancellor Schuschnigg than they did during the rule of the late Chancellor Dollfuss.
Reluctant to go into detail because of diplomatic conventions, which require that the Secretary of State must be the first to receive reports, Mr. Messersmith said the general opinion of observers at Vienna is that the economic and financial situation in Austria is “better than at any time since the war.” This improvement will have a reflection in more generous treatment of the Jewish population, he intimated.
