Beverly Hills, Calif., declared Aug. 9 “Dr. Ruth Gruber Day” to honor the journalist who helped escort Jewish refugees from Italy to New York during World War II and later publicized the plight of the Jews held in European refugee camps after the war. CBS is planning to air in February a movie that will tell the story of how Ruth Gruber, who is not related to the JTA journalist with the same name, helped escort these 1,000 refugees rescued by the United States during the war.
