Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin and American Ambassador Lewis Douglas met today for the second time within 48 hours. Although a Foreign Office spokesman refused to divulge the subject of their conversation, informed quarters stated that it was Palestine.
The same sources asserted that the diplomats discussed what actions their respective governments would take in the anticipated event that the Arab states refuse to obey the United Nations cease-fire order in Palestine. The Foreign Office official refused to comment on the possibility of American aid under the Marshall Plan being cut off from Britain if she continues to aid the Arabs.All he would say was that Britain had agreed to a clause in the European Relief Plan outlining the conditions under which aid would be cut off.
Meanwhile, it was learned that Bevin is scheduled to reply to two questions on the Labor Government’s policy in the present Palestine situation this Wednesday in Commons. However, no comprehensive statement is expected.
