In an attempt to halt the movement of ships carrying visaless Jewish immigrants to Palestine, Foreign Minister Ernest Bevin has asked Demetrio Ports, Panamanian Minister in London, to recommend to the Panamanian president that all ship registrations under the Panamanian flag which do not conform to international or Panama law, be cancelled immediately.

Ports told newsmen that “Bevin asked me as a friend and as a representative of a friendly country, to end this traffic. I am only too happy to cooperate with him. The Jews are being exploited because the ships used (for visaless immigration) are old and many of them are unfit for sea duty.”
