A complete reasessment of British strategy in the Middle East has been ordered by Foreign Secretary Ernest Bevin and War Secretary ## Shirewell prior to resumption of the Anglo-Egyptian talks, scheduled to be held in mid-January, it was learned here today.
Defence leaders were asked to use the presence in London of Sir Brian Robertson, commander of the Middle East land forces of Britain, in order to survey possible alternative bases for Egypt. Sir Brian recently returned from a tour of the Middle East.
According to authoritative sources, serious consideration is being given to a possible shift from bases in Egypt to Cyronaica. This, however, is considered an inadequate substitute for the present. The British Foreign Office, it is understood, hopes to get some idea of Israel’s reaction to Middle East strategy plans when these two MP’s return home. Until then, no further steps in this direction are contemplated.
