The announcement that the British Government hopes that “Transjordan will be given complete independence soon” will be made by Foreign Secretary Bevin tomorrow, it was confirmed today by Reuters, a British news agency.
Emphasizing that “the first really big moment in the General Assembly of the United Nations Organization will come Thursday morning, when Secretary Bevin will tell the gathering of 51 nations that Britain is prepared to hand over most of her mandated territories to the management of the United Nations’ Trusteeship Council,” the Reuters report says:
“Bevin is expected to explain the British Government’s reasons for not including Palestine and Transjordan in the transfer, which will affect chiefly the mandates in Africa. Palestine will be dealt with when the Anglo-American Commission has presented its report. As for Transjordan, there is every hope that it will be given complete independence soon.
“It is reliably learned that Emir Abdullah of Transjordan is expected in London before the end of the month when negotiations will begin with the British Government,” the report continues. “Transjordan may even apply for membership in the URO as an independent state before the and of this first assembly.”
