Congressman Mario Biaggi (D-R-C NY) called upon the United Nations to bring the full power of its influence to bear against Iraq on behalf of the 700 Jews still remaining there. In a letter sent yesterday to UN Secretary General Kurt Waldheim, Biaggi requested an immediate investigation into conditions existing for the Jews in Iraq, stating that “they are currently being harassed and subjected to the worst kind of hardships, reminiscent of 1968 episodes which culminated in the hanging of Jews in Iraq.”
Biaggi also requested that the UN insist upon the immediate release of nine Jews presently being held incommunicado in jail in Baghdad. “The situation in Iraq has deteriorated so drastically in the past months, that unless swift action is taken lives will be lost and justice diminished further by the community of nation’s lack of concern. Only the fact that the world is watching can stay Iraq’s hand from further injustice.” wrote Biaggi.
