A blatant case of anti-Semitic discrimination in employment in this city has incensed the Jewish community following its disclosure by the Zionist Record. The paper printed a letter from a local firm turning down a job applicant on the assumption that she was Jewish.
The applicant had been interviewed and verbally accepted for a position with H.W. Wedderburn, Ltd., a scale manufacturing firm, but upon reaching her home found a letter from the firm stating: “Although it was not disclosed at the interview, judging by the references you gave me I assume that you could be Jewish. If my assumption is correct I regret that I must cancel the arrangements made.” The letter was signed by H.W. Wedderburn, chairman of the company.
