Governor Christian A. Herter of Massachusetts has signed into law a bill placing the Fair Educational Practices Act under the jurisdiction of the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination. The bill passed both the Senate and House without opposition.
It transfers the duties accomplished by Dr. Franklin B. Hawkes of the Department of Education who administered the Fair Educational Act since it came into being in 1949, to the MCAD, a state agency. Sponsors of the measure, with which the Department of Education concurred, who urged the change before the Legislative Committee of Education, praised the efforts of Dr. Hawkes, but requested the transfer to the MCAD as a means of coordinating all discrimination matters under one agency.
